Anatomy Dissection and Teaching (ADT) Elective

Title of Clerkship: Anatomy Dissection and Teaching (ADT) Elective

Elective Year(s): Fourth-Year Elective

Department: Department of Medical Education

Type of Elective: Non-Clinical

Clerkship Site: Gross Anatomy Laboratory

Course Number: MDED 705

Blocks Available: Fall, Spring

Number of Students/Block: 10 Students

Faculty: Hamoun Delaviz, MD, MS

Elective Description/Requirements: This elective is longitudinal and spans the duration of a single semester. However, the student will need to enroll in a specific two-week or four-week time period when registering for the elective.

All requirements must be completed in the semester for which the student is registered. A student may choose to enroll in either the 2-week block or a 4- week block of the elective. A student enrolled in the 2-week block will be expected to contribute 80 hours of time during the semester. A student enrolled in the 4-week block will be expected to contribute 160 hours of time during the semester.

The purpose of the elective is to provide fourth-year medical students the opportunity to advance their anatomical dissection skills and to teach anatomy content to their peers, as well as to gain exposure to current trends in medical education.

Given the importance of human anatomy as a foundational base of knowledge for a range of specialties, this elective may be of value for students who would like to refresh their gross anatomy knowledge before entering residency.

Furthermore, this elective may benefit students intending to enter a surgical specialty, since students have an opportunity to solidify their dissection skills and enhance their hands-on learning through this elective.

Upon completion of the elective, students are encouraged to submit course feedback and suggestions for improving the elective to the course director.

  1. Creation of a Prosected Cadaveric Specimen

A student enrolled in the elective will be expected to work alongside anatomy faculty to help prepare prosected specimens for specific body regions needed for the gross anatomy lab experience. Body regions to be prosected will be determined by educational needs, but the course director will take the student’s preferences and interests into account.

In addition to creating a prosection, a student in the elective will review relevant plastinated specimens available in lab in preparation for their teaching lab sessions.

  1. Attendance at M1 and M2 or ANAT 5000 experiential laboratory sessions

A student enrolled in this elective is required to attend gross anatomy lab session(s) in which their prosection is used, during which time they will guide M1 and M2 students at a designated lab table through their prosected specimen, as well as through other prosected specimens and other relevant plastinated specimens (if available). Each M1/M2 lab group will rotate to the student’s table during a given dissection period. Depending on the timing that the student takes this elective, he or she may be asked to facilitate learning during ANAT 5000 lab sessions, in which Physician Assistant students, MSBS-MS students, and Pathology Assistant students are enrolled.

After leading multiple small groups through prosected and plastinated specimens at their designated lab table, the student is encouraged to then rotate in the lab between groups/tables and ensure students’ questions are answered and that groups are making satisfactory process with their dissections.

The required hours involve a combination of contact hours and non-contact hours.

Contact hours include time:

  • Dissecting (creating a prosection) under the guidance of the course director
  • Teaching the M1 and M2 students or graduate students during experiential lab sessions
  • Participating in review session(s)
  • Participating in a practical set-up

Non-contact hours include time:

  • Dissecting and creating a prosection alone or with other students in the elective without the guidance of the course director
  • Reviewing their gross anatomical prosection and preparing for teaching
  • Reviewing structures of relevant plastinated specimens
  • Reading related anatomical content

Length of Clerkship: This elective is longitudinal and spans the duration of a single semester. It is longer than the standard M3 and M4 elective. The student will need to enroll in a specific two-week or four-week time period when registering for the elective.

A student is permitted to take this elective only once during the span of their medical school career.

Links to Core Competencies/Educational Course Objectives: At the end of this elective, the student will be able to:

  1. Show anatomical structures accurately to M1 and M2 and ANAT 5000 students during designated laboratory sessions. (EPOs: MK-1)
  2. Explain key anatomical relationships, especially as it pertains to clinical cases and surgical procedures during designated laboratory sessions. (EPOs: MK-1)
  3. Explain answers to questions in a manner that enhances learner understanding during laboratory dissection sessions and anatomy lab review sessions. (EPOs: MK-1)
  4. Recognize and locate anatomical structures during laboratory dissection sessions and anatomy lab review sessions. (EPOs: MK-1)
  5. Summarize and present key concepts of a journal article pertaining to medical education. (EPOs: IPC-2)

Professionalism: UT/COM students will meet or exceed the institutional standards for professionalism as stated in the current Educational Program Objectives and the current Educational Course Objectives for the Sponsoring Department.

Instructional Methods:

  1. Creation of anatomy prosection under the guidance of course director
  2. Attendance of anatomy lab sessions, during which time the student is involved in the teaching of the relevant structures from multiple cadaveric specimens to their M1 and M2 peers
  3. Answering student questions during anatomy review sessions
  4. Contributing to the creation of a practice practical examination during the set- up session
  5. Journal Club article presentation and monthly discussion

Evaluation Methods:

  1. Student must complete the prosection of an anatomical specimen. (Mandatory)
    1. Depending on the anatomical region, this may take up to 20-40 hours. The quality of the prosection will be evaluated by the course director and will be based on ease of visualization, as well as the student’s understanding and communication of the relevant anatomical structures to the course director.
  2. Depending on whether they have enrolled for the 2-week or 4- week elective, the student is required to fulfill a sum of either 80 hours or 160 hours, respectively, performing one or more of the following duties:
    1. Creation of a prosection
    2. Teaching during M1 and M2 or ANAT 5000 laboratory dissection sessions
    3. Assisting M1 and M2 students during anatomy lab review sessions
    4. Contributing to a practice practical during a practice practical set-up session

Prerequisites: A student enrolled in the elective must be a UTCOM fourth-year medical student in good academic standing.
