Elective Description/Requirements: A two-week elective spent on a one-to-one basis with an outpatient private practice dermatologist in Bryan. Responsibilities include taking a history and performing a physical examination as well as assisting in minor surgeries. Reading about dermatologic disorders seen in the office is expected.
Length of Course: 2 weeks
Links to Core Competencies/Educational Course Objectives: At the end of this elective, the student will be able to:
- Identify common skin disorders (such as acne vulgaris, atopic dermatitis, various types of skin cancers, actinic keratoses, etc.) and link the gross and histological appearance with the diagnosis. (EPOs: MK-4)
- Describe the pathophysiology of the skin lesions that are seen and link this to the gross appearance and potential for progression of the lesion. (EPOs: MK-4)
- Identify the targeted history and physical examination findings that support a dermatological diagnosis. (EPOs: PC-1)
- List the indications for referral to a Dermatologist. (EPOs: PB-1, SBP-5)
