Elective Description/Requirements: This elective focuses on lifestyle medicine and longevity principles, based on your “Live Well: 8 Steps to Health and Happiness” program. The rotation integrates evidence-based approaches to address the eight drivers of health and happiness: nutrition, physical activity, stress management, sleep hygiene, social connections, purpose, mindfulness, and environmental factors. Students will gain practical skills in patient-centered care, prevention, and self-transformation.

Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks

  1. Describe the role of lifestyle medicine in preventing, managing, and reversing chronic diseases. (EPOs: MK-1,PBL-1, PBL-2)
  2. Explain and address the eight drivers of health for patients through evidence-based strategies. (EPOs: MK-5, MK-7, PBL-2)
  3. Develop personalized wellness plans for patients using motivational interviewing and shared decision-making. (EPOs: SBP-3)
  4. Discuss anti-aging and longevity medicine principles, including personalized nutrition, exercise regimens, stress reduction techniques, and sleep optimization. (EPOs: PBL-3)
  5. Apply holistic care approaches that integrate physical, mental, social, and environmental health determinants. (EPOs: SBP-2, SBP-3)
  6. Cultivate self-awareness by assessing their own health behaviors and implementing personal wellness goals. (EPOs: PBL-1, PBL-2, PBL-3)
  7. Explain the concierge medicine model as a platform for delivering personalized preventative care. (EPOs: SBP-1)

Professionalism: UTCOM students will meet or exceed the institutional standards for professionalism as stated in the current Educational Program Objectives for the sponsoring department.

Instructional Methods:

  1. Didactic sessions
  2. Assigned readings
  3. Discussions with physicians and nurses
  4. Role play to assess communication skills
  5. Observation of clinical encounters between clinicians and patients/families
  6. Role-play assessments
