Elective Description/ Requirements: The elective provides students exposure to a wide variety of medical problems in patients of all ages that are commonly (and uncommonly) seen in private family medicine.  Since the majority of problems can be resolved successfully on an outpatient basis, the emphasis will be on ambulatory care.  Consideration will be given to communication skills, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up, as well as proper use of ancillary studies, consultations and community resources.  The cost of medical care and management of a medical office will be discussed appropriate to the student's interest.

Students will spend the majority of their evaluating ambulatory patients under the supervision of the instructor, and will be able to discuss each case with the instructor.  Students will make daily hospital rounds with the instructor, as well as seeing patients in the office.  Where practical the student will follow selected patients through special procedures, consultations, surgery, EKG's and diagnostic x-rays.

Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks

 1. Demonstrate physical diagnosis skills and therapeutic program planning. (EPOs: PC-1, PC-6, PC-7, PB-3)
 2.  Recognize the importance of continuity of care in improving patient outcomes. (EPOs: SBP-1, SBP-2, SBP-3)
 3.  Describe the role Family Physicians in coordinating care for optimal patient management. (EPOs: PC-4)
 4.  Explain the importance of the Family Physician in providing medical care in a smaller community. (EPOs: SBP-1, SBP-2, SBP-3)

Professionalism:   UT/COMLS students will meet or exceed the institutional standards for professionalism as stated in the current Educational Program Objectives and the current Educational Course Objectives for the Sponsoring Department.

1.  Teaching rounds.
2.  Clinical case presentation/discussions
3.  Mentored clinical practice.

Evaluation methods employed: 
1. Faculty assessment of clinical skills.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of third year required Family Medicine clerkship.
