Elective Description / Requirements:
This elective is designed to provide the students with an opportunity to gain the knowledge, skills and attitude required to diagnose and manage patients hematologic and oncologic disorders through the evaluation of patients.
Length of Clerkship: 2 weeks
Educational Course Objectives: After completing the rotation, the student will be able to:
- Describe laboratory procedures. (EPOs: PC-6)
- peripheral blood smear
- type and cross match blood
- tests used to evaluate hemostasis
- principles of flow cytometry
- basic principles of DNA testing
- Describe the most common causes of the following. (EPOs: MK-4)
- anemia
- thrombocytopenia
- bleeding disorders
- thrombophilic states
- Describe common manifestations of common cancers. (EPOs: MK-4)
- lymphoma
- colon
- breast
- prostate
- Define and describe the approach to end of life care and palliative care of pain (EPOs: MK-6, MK-8)
- Describe common chemotherapies and their pharmacologic characteristics. (EPOs: MK-7)
- Demonstrate how to conduct literature searches and use evidenced based medicine in oncology & hematology. (EPOs: PBL-2, PC-6)
- Describe how to manage oncologic emergencies include: Tumor lysis syndrome, Hypercalcemia. (EPOs: PC-8)
- Describe general cancer terms. (EPOs: MK-4, MK-6)
