Elective Description/Requirements: Students will be exposed to a critical care unit in small community hospital. This will include hemodynamic monitoring and ventilator management. Evaluations will include histories and physicals and care of patients with various critical care diseases who have been admitted to the hospital. Also, assistance in performance of invasive diagnostic procedures in evaluation of critical care diseases.

Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks

  1. Interview and examine patients with the most common critical care diseases. (EPOs: PC-1)
  2. Recognize the signs and symptoms of common critical care diseases. (EPOs: MK-4)
  3. Describe the indications and establish the diagnostic significance of tests used in the recognition of critical care diseases. (EPOs: PC-6)
  4. Synthesize the clinical and laboratory information and create a pertinent problem list. (EPOs: PC-7)
  5. Analyze the clinical and laboratory data and arrive at a reasonable diagnostic hypothesis. (EPOs: PC-7)
  6. Outline plans for the management and treatment of the most common critical care diseases. (EPOs: PC-7)
