Elective Description/Requirements: Student will have the opportunity to shadow neurovascular faculty in the interventional suite, and assist as appropriate with procedures including angiography, thrombolytic treatment of acute ischemic stroke, intracranial arterial stenting and aneurysm coiling.  The enrolled student will participate in care of the patient from presentation to discharge.

Length of Clerkship: 2 weeks

  1. Explain the vascular anatomy of the brain and central nervous system. (EPOs: MK-1)
  2. Recognize acute stroke as an emergency and outline appropriate treatments. (EPOs: PC-8)
  3. Demonstrate the ability to take a concise but appropriate neurovascular history. (EPOs: PC-1)
  4. Perform a detailed neurovascular exam. (EPOs: PC-1)
  5. Demonstrate ability to perform clinical stroke rating scales, including the NIH stroke scale, CHADS-2, ABCD scale, and others. (EPOs: PC-6)
  6. Explain the benefits and risks of thrombolysis in the acute treatment of stroke. (EPOs: PC-6)
  7. Explain the benefits and risks of cerebral angiography in evaluation of stroke patients. (EPOs: PC-6)
  8. Explain the risks for neurovascular disease, including ischemic stroke, intracranial hemorrhage, and vascular anomalies. (EPOs: MK-4)
  9. Localize patient symptoms to the appropriate brain region(s) implicated in their production. (EPOs: PC-6)

Prerequisites: Successful completion of required Neurology Clerkship and third year of medical school.  Must be interested in Neurology or related discipline.
