Elective Description/Requirements:
Students serving as acting interns will function in the role of a primary physician
for a small number of patients. The resident on the medical service as well as the
attending physician will supervise the student. Students will perform all duties expected
of an intern on an internal medicine service including performing the initial history
and physical and written admitting orders, progress notes and discharge summaries.
Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks

- Interview patients and review pertinent medical records collecting data concerning the patients’ presenting problems. (EPOs: PC-1)
- Perform a complete or focused physical examination as appropriate and distinguish normal from abnormal findings. (EPOs: PC-1)
- Synthesize information to develop a reasonable differential diagnosis and be prepared to present to the preceptor. (EPOs: PC-7)
- Following an assessment of all assigned patients, students will describe the chief problems and a plan for treatment. (EPOs: PC-7)
- Prepare a complete H & P for a new patient admitted to the service and chart the results. (EPOs: PC-1)
- Periodically re-evaluate patients’ status including interpretation of new history and physical exam findings (EPOs: PC-1)
- Document clinical encounters in the medical record. (EPOs: PC-1)
- Communicate concise, pertinent information at the time of handoff. (EPOs: IPC-1, IPC-2)
- Use and interpret laboratory and radiographic tests used in diagnosing common diseases. (EPOs: PC-6, MK-4)
- Recognize and manage situations related to common diseases that are potential emergencies. (EPOs: PC-8)
- Apply principles of health systems science in addressing clinical care issues for your patients. (EPOs: SBP-1, SBP-2, SBP-3, SBP-5, PB-1)
- Incorporate feedback, self-reflection and improvement into daily practice. (EPOs: PBL-1, PBL-3)
- Identify ethical problems which arise in patient treatment and care. (EPOs: PB-1, PC-2)
- All students participating on this clerkship will meet or exceed the institutional standards for professional behaviors as evidenced by: (EPOs: PB-1, PB-2, PB-3)
