Elective Description/ Requirements:
Students will evaluate both new admissions and new consults. The student will be expected to follow these patients longitudinally throughout their hospital stay. Students will participate in the reading of ECG’s, the supervision and interpretation of stress tests, the interpretation of echocardiograms and the performance of procedures including transesophageal echocardiograms, cardioversions and cardiac catheterizations. The primary teaching will be one on one and small group discussions related to individual patients. Students will be assigned topics to research and present on rounds. Additionally, during this rotation students will be expected to attend the Friday 7 AM cardiology didactic conference.

Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks

Educational Course Objectives and Links to EPOs:

  1. Perform a history and physical on patients presenting with cardiac conditions. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, PC-1, PB-1, PB-3)
  2. Recognize symptoms of common cardiac diseases. (EPOs: MK-4, PC-1, PC-8)
  3. Describe physical exam findings, particularly those related to cardiac auscultation. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, PC-8)
  4. Describe appropriate diagnostic tests for common cardiac conditions. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, MK-7, PC-1, PC-2, PC-6)
  5. Interpret the results of diagnostic tests. (EPOs: PC-6, PC-7)
  6. Formulate a management plan for patients with cardiac conditions. (EPOs: MK-4, MK-6, PC-1, PC-6, PC-7, PC-8)
