Elective Description/Requirements: This course provides a focused opportunity for the senior student to study gastroenterologic
and hepatologic diseases in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks

Links to Core Competencies/Educational Course Objectives: At the end of this elective, the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an ability to discuss the differential diagnosis of common gastroenterologic/hepatologic problems such as GI bleeding, abdominal pain, diarrhea, jaundice, and hepatitis. EPOs: MK-4, PC-3, PC-2, PC-7, PC-8
  2. Propose an efficient course of evaluation of the differential and interpret the results of the evaluation. EPOs: PC-7, PC-8 
  3. Show sensitivity to the patient’s concerns regarding the illness and also respect for the role of the referring primary service in the patient’s care.
