Elective Description / Requirements:
The student will perform histories and physical exams on inpatients and outpatients, participate in daily hospital rounds, lab and microscope use and interpretation. The student will observe bone marrow aspiration and biopsy. 

Length of Clerkship: 2 weeks

Educational Course Objectives and Links to EPOs:

  1. Describe laboratory procedures: peripheral blood smear, type and cross match blood, tests used to evaluate hemostasis, principles of flow cytometry, and basic principles of DNA testing. (EPOs: PC-5)
  2. Describe the most common causes of anemia, thrombocytopenia, bleeding disorders, and thrombophilic states. (EPOs: MK-4)
  3. Describe manifestations of common cancers: lymphoma, colon, breast, and prostate. (EPOs: MK-4)
  4. Discuss how to approach end of life care and palliative of pain. (EPOs: MK-6)
  5. Describe common chemotherapies and their pharmacologic characteristics. (EPOs: MK-7)
  6. Demonstrate how to conduct literature searches and use evidenced based medicine in oncology & hematology. (EPOs: PBL-1, PC-5)
  7. Describe how to manage oncologic emergencies including: Tumor lysis syndrome, Hypercalcemia. (EPOs: PC-7)
  8. Describe general cancer terms such as remission, adjuvant, and neoadjuvant. (EPOs: MK-4, MK-6)
  9. Describe principles of radiation oncology. (EPOs: PB-1)
