Elective Description/Requirements: The student will evaluate patients who present with possible infectious diseases including fevers of unknown origin, acute febrile episodes, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, endocarditis, parasitic infestation, postoperative fever and AIDS. Students will be able to describe the appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic approach for each patient evaluated. Students will follow assigned patients on a daily basis and review the medical literature on diseases seen during rounds. The student should be able to perform and identify organisms on Gram stain and be familiar with the general microbiology laboratory and how it can be useful in patient management. Students should be able to describe the appropriate means of obtaining cultures from various sites.

Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks

  1. Formulate an integrated approach to the diagnosis and management of infections in hospitalized and ambulatory patients. (EPOs: MK-4, PC-1, PC-5, PC-6, PC-7)
  2. Integrate knowledge of major pathogenic organisms with knowledge of antibiotic groups in the selection of appropriate antibiotic regimens. (EPOs: MK-4, MK-6, PC-6, PC-7)
  3. Explain the management of HIV disease and common hospital-based infectious diseases. (EPOs: MK-4, MK-6, PC-6, PC-7)
