Elective Description/Requirements: This elective consists of a mixture of inpatient consultation and outpatient experiences. The student will have primary and/or consultative responsibility for patients who have a variety of acid-base and electrolyte disorders and problems in clinical nephrology and renal transplantation. Students will be responsible for evaluating patients and formulating a plan of care, which will then be presented, to faculty. House officers may or may not be on the rotation. Topics discussed during the rotation will include: fluids and electrolytes, acid-base problems, hypertension, nephrolithiasis, acute renal failure, chronic renal failure, glomerular diseases, interstitial diseases, dialysis, and transplant. Opportunity to attend morning report and noon conference will also be provided.

Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks

Educational Course Objectives and Links to EPOs:

  1. Interview and examine patients with the most common diseases of the kidney. (EPOs: PC-1)
  2. Recognize the symptoms and signs of common diseases of the kidney. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4)
  3. Describe the indications and establish the diagnostic significance of tests used in the recognition and management of diseases of the kidney. (EPOs: MK-4, PC-6)
  4. Synthesize the clinical and laboratory information and create a pertinent problem list. (EPOs: MK-4, PC-1, PC-6)
  5. Analyze the clinical and laboratory data and arrive at a reasonable diagnostic hypothesis. (EPOs: PC-6)
  6. Outline plans for the management and treatment of the most common diseases of the kidney. (EPOs: PC-7)
