Elective Description/Requirements:
Student will be integrated into the ambulatory obstetrics and gynecology service at
the ProMedica Center for Health Services. This site provides care to a wide demographic
range of patients, often with significant medical co-morbidities and numerous social
determinants of health issues. The student will participate in the care of prenatal
care patients, general office gynecology as well as preoperative visits. The student
is required to carry out a literature review of a relevant obstetric or gynecologic
topic and make a 30-minute presentation to the attendings, residents, and clerkship
students OR create an educational tool for student education.
Length of Elective: 4 weeks

- Obtain focused and comprehensive obstetric and gynecologic patient histories. (EPOs: PC1, PC3, MK1, PB1, PB3)
- Perform focused and comprehensive physical examinations for obstetric and gynecologic patients. (EPOs: PC1, MK1, PB1, PB3)
- Prepare organized, appropriately focused, and accurate oral patient presentations. (EPOs: IPC1, IPC2)
- Document a clinical encounter in the electronic health record (e.g., History &Physical exam, office note, procedure note, orders. (EPOs: PC4, IPC1, IPC2)
- Integrate diagnostic and clinical information to formulate a primary and complete and complete differential diagnosis. (EPOs: PC6, PC7, MK1, MK4)
- Develop a prioritized and complete management plan for a prenatal patient or gynecologic patient and describe a rationale for the clinical plan, incorporating consideration of fetal and/or maternal diagnoses for obstetric patients and co morbidities for gynecologic patients. (EPOs: PC2, PC6, PC7, PC89, MK1, MK4, MK6, PC10, PC11, SBP5)
- Provide contraceptive counseling individualized to the patient’s context. (EPOs: MK2, MK3, MK4, MK6, MK7, PC1, PC2, PC7, IPC2, IPC 3, PBL7)
- Describe the screening tests appropriate for an annual exam based on age and risk factors. (EPOs: MK3, MK4, MK6, MK3-7, PC13, SBP3)
- Apply the principles of health systems science in addressing clinical care issues for your patients. (EPOs: SBP1, SBP2, SBP3, SBP-5, PB16)
- Incorporate feedback, self-reflection, and improvement into daily practice. (EPOs: PBL 1, PBL-3 )
Professionalism: UT/COMLS students will meet or exceed the institutional standards for professionalism as stated in the current Educational Program Objectives and the current Educational Course Objectives for the Sponsoring Department.
Instructional Methods:
- Clinical experience – providing care to obstetric and gynecologic patients at the CHS.
- Conferences --attend Grand Rounds, M&M, journal club, multidisciplinary patient care conferences and applicable resident didactic teaching sessions.
- Assigned reading
Evaluation methods employed:
- Preceptor assessment
- 30-minute presentation of pertinent researched topic as approved by one of the above listed Attendings OR create an educational tool for student education.
- Completion of hours log
- Completion of 2 new patient History and physical exams or consults
- Two 24 hour calls in Labor and Delivery or with gynecology coverage resident—assigned dates to be discussed with clerkship coordinator.
Prerequisites: Successful completion of all third year required clerkships.
