Elective Description/Requirements: During this acting internship experience, the student will be integrated into the high-risk obstetrics service as an acting intern on the team and be involved with outpatient clinics, inpatient care, and high-risk obstetrical patients as well as assist with high-risk deliveries and obstetrical surgeries.  The student will attend resident didactic teaching sessions and all other applicable education sessions.  The student will also prepare a brief literature review about a common clinic problem for presentation at the morning conference.

Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks

  1. Demonstrate proficiency in obtaining a complete obstetric & gynecologic history and physical with implementation of a plan (EPOs: PC-1, PC-8, MK-1, MK-4, PBL-2)
  2. Interpret the significance of history, physical findings, lab data, and imaging studies of various obstetric conditions. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-3,MK-4, PC-6, PC-7)
  3. Write complete progress notes, present succinctly, and discuss in the clinical setting. (EPOs: PBL-2, PBL-6, PC-1, PC-9, IPC-2)
  4. Describe basic anatomy, physiology, and co-relation of medical conditions within an obstetric context. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4)
  5. Describe basic principles of prenatal care and antenatal surveillance. (EPOs: PBL-2, IPC-2, MK-1, MK-7)
  6. Perform basic obstetric examinations, including assessment of the fetus, maternal physical exam, and interpretation of sonographic data. (EPOs: PC-1, IPC-1, SBP-5)
  7. Student will perform admission history and physical exams with diagnostic plan, differential diagnosis, treatment plan and follow up and discharge planning. (EPOs: PC-1, IPC-1, SBP-5)

Professionalism: UT/COM students will meet or exceed the institutional standards for professionalism as stated in the current Educational Program Objectives and the current Educational Course Objectives for the Sponsoring Department.

  3. Conferences – attend Grand Rounds, M&M, journal club, and applicable resident didactic teaching sessions.
  4. Independent learning (assigned readings)

  3. Clinical documentation review (Completion of a minimum of 2 new patient histories and physicals)
