Elective Description/Requirements:
Student will be integrated into the MFM service as an active intern, participating
in all aspects of the practice of Maternal Fetal Medicine both inpatient and outpatient.
The student will be exposed to the care of high-risk pregnant females and their fetus
in the prenatal, intrapartum and postpartum period. This experience will be obtained
at the Toledo Hospital. The student will be assigned inpatient MFM patients with primary
responsibility for the care of these patients under the supervision of the MFM faculty.
The responsibility will include carrying out :(i) Admission history and review of
the prenatal record and physical examination, (ii) Diagnostic plan, (iii) Differential
diagnosis, (iv) Order laboratory tests and imaging studies and review results, (v)
Treatment Plan to include writing the orders, (vi) Participate in the procedures (e.g.,
cerclage placement), (vii) Follow up and discharge planning, and (viii) Present patients
at daily rounds. The student is required to carry out a literature review of a relevant
MFM topic and make a 30-minute presentation to the MFM team.
Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks
Educational Course Objectives and Links to EPOs:
- Collect independently both focused and comprehensive obstetrical patient histories. (EPOs: PC1)
- Perform independently both focused and comprehensive physical examinations for obstetrical patients. (EPOs: PC1)
- Prepare organized, appropriately focused, and accurate oral patient presentations. (EPOs: IPC1, IPC2)
- Document a clinical encounter in the electronic health record (e.g., History & Physical exam, daily progress note, orders and discharge summary). (EPOs: PC1)
- Integrate diagnostic and clinic information to formulate a primary and complete differential diagnosis. (EPOs: PC6, PC7)
- Construct a concise and succinct patient handoff. (EPOs: IPC1, IPC2)
- Develop a complete prioritized management plan with the health care team for a patient on the antepartum service and describe a rationale for the clinical plan. (EPOs: PC7, PC6, PC9, SBP5)
- Apply the principles of health systems science in addressing clinical care issues for patients. (EPOs: SBP1, SBP2, SBP3, SBP5, IPC1)
- Incorporate feedback, self-reflection and improvement into daily practice. (EPOs: PBL 1, PBL3)
Professionalism: UT/COMLS students will meet or exceed the institutional standards for professionalism
as stated in the current Educational Program Objectives and the current Educational
Course Objectives for the Sponsoring Department.
Instructional Methods:
- Clinical experience – rounding on inpatients with MFM attending and presenting patients at Handoff. Participating in ambulatory practice at the MFM Unit.
- Conferences – attend Grand Rounds, M&M, Journal Club, multidisciplinary patient care conferences and applicable resident didactic teaching sessions.
- Assigned reading.
Evaluation methods employed:
- Preceptor clinical competency assessment
- Oral presentation on a maternal of fetal medicine topic as approved by MFM Attending.
- Clinical evaluation on the inpatient and ambulatory services.
- Completion of 2 new patient (or consult) history and physical exams (minimum).
Prerequisites: Successful completion of third-year required clerkship in OB/GYN.
Special Requirements: One 24-hour call duty. Dates to be determined with Clerkship Coordinator (see syllabus).
