Elective Description:
In this rotation, the student will have the opportunity to work with our maternal fetal medicine attendings as well as residents on the antepartum service. There will be opportunities to observe and participate in multiple areas including ultrasound, the out-patient clinic and the in-patient service. There will be a night call requirement. Students will be expected to attend the same didactic offerings that the residents attend.

Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks

Educational Course Objectives and Links to EPOs:

  1. Collect independently both focused and comprehensive obstetrical patient histories. (EPOs: PC1)
  2. Perform independently both focused and comprehensive physical examinations for obstetrical patients. (EPOs: PC1)
  3. Prepare organized, appropriately focused, and accurate oral patient presentations. (EPOs: IPC1, IPC2)
  4. Document a clinical encounter in the electronic health record (e.g., History & Physical exam, daily progress note, orders and discharge summary). (EPOs: PC1)
  5. Integrate diagnostic and clinic information to formulate a primary and complete differential diagnosis. (EPOs: PC6, PC7)
  6. Construct a concise and succinct patient handoff. (EPOs: IPC1, IPC2)
  7. Develop a prioritized management plan with the health care team for a patient on the antepartum service and describe a rationale for the clinical plan. (EPOs: PC6, PC7, PC9, SBP5)
  8. Apply the principles of health systems science in addressing clinical care issues for patients. (EPOs: SBP1, SBP2, SBP3, SBP5,  PB1 )
    Incorporate feedback, self-reflection and improvement into daily practice. (EPOs: PBL1, PBL3)

Professionalism: UTCOMLS students will meet or exceed the institutional standards for professionalism as stated in the current Educational Program Objectives and the current Educational Course Objectives for the sponsoring department.

Instructional Methods:

  1. Clinical experience, inpatient

  3. Conferences – attend resident didactic teaching sessions and any other learning sessions as applicable
  4. Independent learning (assigned readings)

  1. Mid-Clerkship Formative Feedback Form
  2. Clinical performance (Preceptor evaluation(s))
  3. Clinical documentation review (Completion of history and physical exam on minimum of 2 new patient, logged in RocketMed)

Prerequisites: This rotation is only open to 4th year medical students. Application to include a brief essay - In 200 words or less, explain why you are interested in the Riverside OB/GYN Program
