Elective Description/Requirements: This course offers an excellent clinical and endoscopic exposure in the field of pediatric gastroenterology with significant opportunity for one-to-one interaction with the pediatric GI faculty. The student will spend majority of the time in the outpatient setting and the interested student will be exposed to the inpatient setting.

- Describe and explain (diagnosis, work-up, treatment including pathophysiology) of common pediatric gastroenterological/hepatological pathology (e.g. GI bleeding, abdominal pain, diarrhea, jaundice, and hepatitis). (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, MK-6)
- Be able to explain and develop the evaluation and work-up of common Pediatric GI pathologies. This should include GERD, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, biliary atresia, auto-immune hepatitis, and failure to thrive. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, MK-6, PC-1, PC-3, PC-6)
- Describe the indications and utility behind common pediatric GI procedures (e.g. Upper endoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, endoscopic retrograde pancreatico-cholangiography (ERCP), prolonged esophageal pH monitoring, esophageal and anorectal manometry, rectal suction biopsy, liver biopsy, paracentesis, and pancreatic stimulation test). (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, PC-1, PBL-2)
- Explain the management of pediatric patients receiving central hyper-alimentation, including indications of parenteral nutrition. (EPOs: MK-4, MK-6)
- Develop skills in evaluating and managing common gastroenterologic and hepatobiliary problems including celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, and indeterminate colitis), hematemesis, hematochezia, melena, failure to thrive, feeding and swallowing difficulties, acid-peptic disease, esophageal reflux disease (GERD), jaundice, abnormal liver function, coagulopathy, hypoalbuminemia, acute and chronic pancreatitis, gastroparesis, and colonic polyps, Hirschsprung’s disease, and intestinal dysmotility syndromes. - Develop skills in diagnosing and managing acute and chronic liver failure and its complications and describing indications for liver transplantation. (EPOs: MK-1, PC-1, PC-8, PC-9, PBL-2, SBP-2)
