Elective Description/Requirements: Student will be exposed to infants and children with life threatening diseases including meningitis, severe asthma and septic shock. In addition, other patient types will include trauma, overdoses and metabolic derangements and illnesses of unknown etiologies. 90% in active unit, 10% conferences. Each acting intern must complete two on-line modules to prepare the acting intern for his/her role as teachers of junior medical students.

- Evaluate patients with multisystem diseases by using diagnostic skills with emphasis on pathophysiological processes. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, PC-6)
- Describe knowledge of complex disease processes and their relationship of physiology to disease on rounds and in written notes. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-2, MK-3, MK-4, PC-2)
- Recognize the roles of nurses and other personnel in patient care, the operation and function of durable equipment items in the PICU. Patient care at the end of life and “brain death” in children.. (EPOs: PB-1, IPC-2)
- Participate in evening or weekend clinical care to support continuity of patient care and demonstrate professionalism in varied clinical settings. (EPO: IPC-2)
- Conduct structured patient handoffs using an evidence‑based communication approach to ensure safe and accurate transfer of care. (EPO: SBP-1)
Professionalism: UT/COM students will meet or exceed the institutional standards for professionalism as stated in the current Educational Program Objectives and the current Educational Course Objectives for the Sponsoring Department.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of third year required Pediatric clerkship.
Special Requirements:
- As part of the acting internship, students are required to participate in at least one evening or weekend clinical experience. This experience ensures exposure to the full spectrum of patient care responsibilities and supports readiness for residency-level schedules and work environment.
- Students are expected to participate in structured patient handoffs as part of their clinical responsibilities. This includes observing and contributing to the sign-out processes to ensure safe, effective transitions of care.
- Will be on call every fourth night.
