Elective Description/Requirements: The pediatric pulmonary medicine elective is composed of both outpatient and inpatient rotation. The inpatient rotation consists of the patients who are hospitalized at TCH under the primary pulmonary service or on a consultation basis. This also includes patients in the neonatal ICU and pediatric ICU. Students are encouraged to accompany the attending physician. The outpatient service at TCH offers exposure to a wide variety of pediatric pulmonary problems, including asthma, chronic cough, chronic lung disease of prematurity, pediatric sleep disorders, cystic fibrosis, infant apnea, etc. Pulmonary function tests and pulmonary physiology will be part of the daily rounds while on this elective. Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5 pm unless instructed otherwise.

  1. Develop and demonstrate competent skills in obtaining a history and performing a physical examination focused on the pulmonary system (e.g. breath sounds and work of breathing) (EPOs: MK-1, PC-1, PC-4, PC-6)
  2. Develop and demonstrate ability to interpret chest radiographs, arterial blood gas, pulse oximetry, pulmonary function PB2 tests, and respiratory tract cultures (EPOs: MK-1, PC-1, PC-4, PC-6, PB-2)
  3. Be able to discuss the diagnostic utility and limitations of procedures/imaging (e.g., bronchoscopy, fluoroscopy, PB2 chest CT, chest MRI) to characterize airway, lung, pleural, and mediastinal disease. (EPOs: MK-1, PC-1, PC-4, PC-6, PB-2)
  4. Develop and be able to demonstrate an approach to evaluate pediatric pulmonary disorders (e.g. stridor, wheezing, IPC1, IPC2 chronic cough, apnea). (EPOs: MK-1, PC-1, PC-4, PC-6, IBC-1, IBC-2)
  5. Understand the natural history and recognize exacerbations of chronic lung diseases such as cystic fibrosis, asthma, interstitial lung diseases and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, MK-6, M7-7)
  6. Describe the diagnosis and treatment options related to cystic fibrosis. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, MK-6, MK-7)
  7. Be able to discuss the appropriate use, risks, and benefits of commonly use medications/treatments (e.g. supplemental oxygen, airway clearance techniques, bronchodilators, diuretics, systemic and inhaled corticosteroids, and antibiotics). (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, MK-6, MK-7)
  8. Recognize obstructive sleep apnea and understand the evaluation, management, and adverse effects of this disorder. (EPOs: MK-1, MK-4, MK-6, MK-7, PC-1, PC-4, PC-6)

Prerequisites: Successful completion of third year required Pediatric clerkship.
