Elective Description/Requirements: The student will be taught about the appropriate use of antimicrobials and antimicrobial resistance. The student will gain clinical skills on the management of antimicrobial therapy in the inpatient and outpatient setting. The student will develop an understanding on the use of vaccinations in children and adolescents. This elective should be of considerable practical value to the student planning a career in both primary care and sub-specialty care.

Length of Clerkship: 2 weeks

  1. Explain the rationale for use of vaccines in children and adolescents. (EPOs: MK-3, MK-7, PC-2, SBP-3)
  2. Discuss the use of antibiotic agents based on disease presentation. (EPOs: MK-4, MK-6)
  3. Develop an appropriate antibiotic management plan for infectious disease presentations in pediatric patients in the inpatient and outpatient setting. (EPOs: PC-8, PC-9)
  4. Give appropriate clinical presentations for patients consulted on the pediatric infectious disease service. (EPOs:MK-1, MK-4, PC-1, PC-7)
  5. Interpret laboratory data to determine the best antimicrobial therapy for a patient. (EPOs: MK-4)

Prerequisites: Successful completion of required third year Pediatric clerkship.
