Physiology revisited in the clinical setting through cases

Title of Clerkship: Physiology Revisited in the Clinical Setting Through Cases

Elective Year(s): Fourth-Year Elective

Department: Department of Medical Education

Type of Elective: Non-Clinical

Clerkship Site: Department of Medical Education, University of Toledo Health Science Campus

Course Number: MDED 704

Blocks Available: Fall, Spring

Number of Students/Block: 24 Students

Faculty: Bindu Menon, Ph.D. Coral D. Matus, MD, FAAFP

Elective Description/Requirements: This elective places emphasis on identifying and interpreting pathophysiology associated with various disorders by focusing on application to clinical cases. The course intends to provide an opportunity for students to revisit and refresh normal physiology of the human body learned in the first two years in the backdrop of carefully chosen clinical vignettes. The students will also discuss clinical aspects such as diagnosis and management related to the representative cases. The course will consist of in-person/virtual sessions held 2-3 hours a day, for 2 weeks. Approximately 20 cases (chosen from the major organ systems) will be covered in total during the two-week period. Students are expected to do independent readings based on the topics for each module in preparation of the in-person sessions.

Length of Clerkship: 2 Weeks

Links to Core Competencies/Educational Course Objectives: At the end of this elective, the student will be able to:

  1. Explain the basic physiology of various tissues and organs. (EPOs: MK-1)
  2. Explain the clinical significance of the alterations in the normal physiological processes in various organs/tissues. (EPOs: MK-4)
  3. Explain how the clinical presentation and laboratory results that are used in the diagnosis are linked to the pathophysiology of the disorder. (EPOs: MK-4, PC-6, PBL-1, PBL-3)
  4. Explain how the pathophysiology associated with the disorder can drive the management of the disorder in a positive direction. (EPOs: MK-4, MK-6, PC-3, PC-6, PC-7)

Professionalism: UT/COM students will meet or exceed the institutional standards for professionalism as stated in the current Educational Program Objectives and the current Educational Course Objectives for the Sponsoring Department.

Instructional Methods:

  1. Independent learning to be completed by the students ahead of the sessions
  2. Small group discussion of the selected cases
  3. Summarization of the clinical and pathophysiological concepts related to each case

Evaluation Methods:

  1. Attendance
  2. Submission of a written assignment based on one of the chosen modules in the end

Prerequisites: Successful completion of foundational sciences curriculum (pass)
