Elective Description/ Requirements: This rotation offers the student interested in pulmonary and critical care medicine exposure to all aspects of modern pulmonary medicine.  In addition to pulmonary and critical care consultations, the student will acquire basic skills in interpreting chest x-rays, reading pulmonary function tests, and blood gas analysis.  A comprehensive bibliography of suggested readings on a multitude of pulmonary and critical care topics is provided.

Length of Clerkship: 4 weeks

Educational Course Objectives and Links to EPOs:

  1. Interview and examine patients with the most common pulmonary and critical care diseases. (EPOs: PC-1)
  2. Recognize the symptoms and signs of common pulmonary diseases. (EPOs: MK-4)
  3. Describe the indications and establish the diagnostic significance of tests used in the recognition and management of pulmonary diseases. (EPOs: PC-6)
  4. Synthesize the clinical and laboratory information and create a pertinent problem list. (EPOs: PC-6, PC-7)
  5. Analyze the clinical and laboratory data and arrive at a reasonable diagnostic hypothesis. (EPOs: PC-6, PC-7)
  6. Outline plans for the management and treatment of the most common pulmonary and critical care diseases. (EPOs: PC-7)

  1. 70% Inpatient clinical
  2. 10% Outpatient clinical
  3. 20% Conferences/Lectures/Seminars

Evaluation Methods:

  1. Attendance
  2. Evaluation of case presentations and write-ups
  3. Faculty/resident observation

Prerequisites: Successful completion of required Internal Medicine Clerkship
