Elective Description/Requirements: The intent of the clerkship is to familiarize the students with the clinical presentations, the differential diagnosis and the care of the common rheumatic disorders, the autoimmune connective tissue disorders and chronic pain syndromes. All students will be provided with a core packet of materials that form the scientific basis for the practice of rheumatology. The students will participate in rounds on the consultative rheumatology service as well as contribute to the care of in-house hospital patients. Furthermore, students will participate in daily outpatient’s clinics from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  Students will actively participate in evaluating new and return clinic patients with rheumatic diseases. The clinic experience will provide the opportunity for the students to gain knowledge in the art of arthrocentesis as well as the soft tissue injection. Emphasis will also be placed on the radiologic interpretation of rheumatic disease and the specialized serology that define rheumatic disorders. During the rotation, the student will work closely with the residents on the service.

  2. Recognize the symptoms and signs of the most common rheumatologic diseases. (EPOs: MK-4)
  3. Describe the indications and establish the diagnostic significance of various tests used in the identification of infectious diseases. (EPOs: PC-6)
  4. Synthesize the clinical and laboratory information and create a pertinent problem list. (EPOs:  PC-7)
  5. Analyze the clinical and laboratory data and arrive at a reasonable diagnostic hypothesis. (EPOs: PC-7)
  6. Outline plans for management and treatment of the most common infectious diseases. (EPOs: PC-7)
