Elective Description/ Requirements:
Students will be assigned to work with Wound Care Solutions medical director Dr. George Magill. Students will learn the different types of wounds, how to treat them, the etiology and how to manage them.. There will be exposure to a wide variety of wound care. Students will work up and manage acute and chronic wounds. Students will spend time in the wound care clinic at Community Hospitals and Wellness Centers to understand the techniques of wound care dressing and how to manage them. Students will also participate in the OR when wound care requires anesthesia.

Length of Clerkship: 2 weeks

Educational Course Objectives: At the end of the rotation the student will be able to:

1.  Obtain and document a wound care history and physical examination. EPOs: PC-1, PC-2, PC-3, MK-1, MK-7

2.  Identify and explain the key issues in managing the wound care patient. EPOs: PC-7, PC-8, PC-9, MK-7

3. Apply principles of the basic science of wound management including debridement and dressing changes. EPOs: PC-6, PC-8, PC-9, PC-10, MK-7

4.  Implement a plan for wound care management including pain management . EPOs: PC-6, MK-8

5. Identify the important infectious disease processes associated with the development and management of chronic wounds. EPOs: PC-2, PC-3, PC-7, PC-8, MK-1, MK-2, MK-7

6.  Write a complete and accurate daily progress note. EPOs: IPC-1, IPC-2, PC-1, PC-3, PC-4, PC-7

7.  Accurately present patient information concerning the patient’s condition and progress. EPOs: IPC-1, IPC-2, PC-1, PC-3
