13 ABC: Great Lakes AI Week Begins at UToledo
The College of Engineering hosted artificial intelligence certification workshops
sponsored by JobsOhio on Tuesday, kicking off a series of on-campus events under the
broader umbrella of Great Lakes AI Week.
The Blade: Great Lakes AI Week Conference Convenes National Experts at BGSU
UToledo will host several events in support of Great Lakes AI Week, including certification
workshops on Tuesday, Nov. 4; a discussion on AI and sports on Wednesday, Nov. 5;
and an AI in Healthcare Symposium on Friday, Nov. 7.
AAC&U Institute on Artificial Intelligence in Pedagogy and Curriculum
A group of UToledo faculty (Leon Cheng, Jeanne Kusina, Jerry Natal, Arjun Sabharwal and Scott Molitor) are representing UToledo during the year-long AAC&U Institute on Artificial Intelligence in Pedagogy and Curriculum (IAIPC). Our goal is to improve our efforts in providing professional development to our staff and faculty on the use of AI, and to ensure our students satisfy learning outcomes on the use of AI-based tools as appropriate to the disciplines they are pursuing. UToledo AI Vision
- All UToledo students will acquire discipline-specific skills for using AI tools that meet the needs of their future employers / professions
- This will also entail providing opportunities for faculty and staff to develop general and discipline-specific skills in using AI tools to help students achieve AI-related learning outcomes
- Will also help faculty and staff do their jobs more efficiently and effectively
Professional development action plan
•Provide appropriate training on AI tools for our faculty and staff that reaches the
widest possible audience
•Ensure faculty and staff are familiar with AI tools appropriate to their disciplines
•Help faculty and staff utilize AI tools to be more effective and efficient in their
respective positions
Curriculum action plan
- Outline and implement a process to incorporate AI learning outcomes and associated curricular modifications for all credential-bearing programs
- Ensure all students will have discipline-specific skills for using AI tools that meet the needs of their future employers / professions
- Action plan is process itself - we do not have any predetermined notions of what outcome will be

Embracing Innovation to Increase Engagement
The University of Toledo Foundation is introducing the first virtual engagement officer,
Doug Reynolds. Doug, powered by artificial intelligence, is the first of his kind.
Doug will provide touchpoints to alumni, donors and community members who request
information on events, engagement opportunities and other areas of the University.
Doug is an example of UToledo’s pioneering leadership in AI for social good, supporting an innovation that will empower nonprofits worldwide to achieve their life-changing missions.
