Strategic Plan 2027-2031

Growing For Toledo

Pillar 3: Build for a Healthy Toledo

Home to the region's only academic health system growing to care for more of northwest Ohio.

Why It Matters

As the region's only academic health system, UToledo has a unique responsibility to improve the health of individuals and communities across northwest Ohio through innovative care, research and education. Our purpose and our promise come together in the patients we serve and in the health professionals we prepare.

Our Goal

Advance UToledo Health's vision to become the preferred health system in northwest Ohio. We will grow our clinical and research portfolio, deliver the highest quality care and educational outcomes, advance knowledge through research and innovation, and be a trusted partner in improving community health.

By 2031

  • Magnet Hospital designation for The University of Toledo Medical Center
  • New UToledo Health locations in communities across the region
  • A stronger academic health system, with new residency programs and expanded clinical research

How We'll Get There

Pursue performance excellence. The University of Toledo Medical Center will pursue Magnet Hospital designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a distinction held by fewer than 10% of U.S. hospitals. We will build comprehensive service lines in transplant medicine and oncology, and strengthen our culture with the College of Medicine and Life Sciences.

Grow health education. With the College of Medicine and Life Sciences, we will add at least one accredited residency or fellowship program and establish or renew at least one academic affiliation with a regional health system, so our learners get the clinical experience their training requires.

Expand clinical research. With our Health Science Campus colleges and the Office of Research and Innovation, we will recruit clinician-scientists, expand research infrastructure and grow clinical trials, strengthening UToledo's R1 standing.

Extend our regional reach. We will bring UToledo Health services to at least three new communities and form at least one new partnership with a regional hospital, health system or provider group.
