The University of Toledo Office of Sustainability

Energy

Energy efficiency is a key component of AASHE’s framework, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, decrease energy consumption, and transition to renewable energy sources. UToledo aligns with these goals by implementing energy-saving technologies, optimizing building operations, and fostering a culture of energy conservation.

Key Initiatives

  • Energy-Efficient Building Systems
UToledo has upgraded its infrastructure with energy-efficient systems, including LED lighting, energy management systems, and HVAC optimizations. These improvements reduce energy consumption, align with AASHE’s criteria for sustainable infrastructure, and contribute to the goal of reducing carbon emissions.
  • Renewable Energy Integration
UToledo actively invests in renewable energy sources, such as solar panels and geothermal systems, to decrease reliance on fossil fuels. The HSC Tech Park Solar Field, for example, has generated over 1.6 million kWh of clean energy since 2020, directly supporting the AASHE goal of increasing renewable energy adoption on campuses.
  • Campus-Wide Energy Awareness Campaigns
UToledo runs regular awareness campaigns aimed at reducing energy consumption among students, faculty, and staff. These campaigns educate the campus community about simple energy-saving actions, such as turning off lights and using energy-efficient appliances. These initiatives not only support behavioral change but also reflect AASHE’s focus on fostering energy-conscious campus environments.

Achievements and Impact

  • 21.7% Reduction in Electricity Use:
UToledo has achieved a 21.7% reduction in electricity use from FY07 to FY24, approaching its goal of a 22% decrease by 2025. This aligns with AASHE’s energy reduction objectives, contributing to a lower carbon footprint and enhanced sustainability.
  • Successful Renewable Energy Projects:
The HSC Tech Park Solar Field has saved over $157,917 in energy costs and reduced carbon emissions significantly, demonstrating tangible progress in renewable energy integration.

Why It Matters

Efficient energy use and increased reliance on renewable sources are critical to reducing carbon emissions, saving operational costs, and supporting sustainable development. UToledo’s energy initiatives align with AASHE STARS standards, emphasizing sustainable infrastructure, conservation, and a shift toward renewable energy sources. By focusing on these energy strategies, UToledo not only meets sustainability goals but also inspires the campus community to engage in energy-conscious behaviors.
