Substances in this Schedule have no currently accepted medical use in the U.S., a lack of accepted safety for use, and a severe potential for abuse

Examples
Heroin, LSD, marijuana, peyote, ecstasy


Substances in this Schedule have currently accepted medical use in the U.S.; however, they have severe restrictions due to high potential for abuse which may lead to dependence.

Examples
Morphine, PCP, cocaine, methadone, pentobarbital, fentanyl, methamphetamine


Substances in this Schedule have currently accepted medical use in the U.S. and less potential for abuse relative to those in I/II.

Examples
Ketamine, buprenorphine, anabolic steroids, codeine, some barbiturates


Substances in this Schedule have currently accepted medical use in the U.S. and less potential for abuse relative to those in III.

Examples
Xanax, Klonopin, Valium, Ativan
