American Red Cross Certification Classes
The University of Toledo Office of Recreation is an authorized provider of American Red Cross certification programs. All classes are held at the UT Student Recreation Center located on East Rocket Drive off Douglas Road (between Dorr and University Hills Blvd.). We are happy to accommodate participants of all abilities.

Designed for individuals with a duty to respond to emergencies. This program combines discussions, video and hands-on training. Real-life rescue scenarios reinforce decision-making skills. Course covers how to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants until more advanced medical personnel take over.
Class Information
- Two-year CPR/AED professional level certification
- Resuscitation mask included
Prerequisites/Requirements
- No Prerequisites
- Must attend and fully participate in the entire class
- Must pass all skill checks and receive an 80% or higher on written exam
Class Length - Training is approximately 4 hours
Cost - The cost is $65 for UT Students, REC Members, and Camp Adventure students;

If you’re 15 or older and looking for a great summer job or challenging career that’s in demand, the Red Cross Lifeguarding program is the place to start. Through videos, group discussion and hands-on practice, you’ll learn patron rescue and surveillance skills, first aid and CPR/AED. Courses are available with a focus on a variety of environments, including pools, waterfronts, waterparks and shallow water attractions.
Class Information
- Two-Year Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certification; Waterfront certification
available as well
- Resuscitation mask included
Prerequisites/Requirements
- Must successfully pass a Pre-Course Session (see below)
- Participants must be at least 15 years old
- A one piece bathing suit must be brought to the first class, and every class thereafter
- Must attend and fully participate in the entire class
- Must pass all skill checks and receive an 80% or higher on written exam
- We do not reserve spots or make waiting lists for classes that are full
Class Length - Training is approximately 24-29 hours
Cost
- The cost is $145 for UT Students, REC Members, and Camp Adventure students; and
$150 for Non-Members
- The cost includes the pre-course session
- NOTE: Participants who fail a certification class will not receive a credit or a refund.
Pre-Course Session
- Bring a swimsuit, towel, and padlock for the locker room
- These classes fill up quick, please register early and pay so you do not risk being
dropped from the class
- Required of every lifeguarding registrant
- No additional cost
- Must be completed BEFORE starting a lifeguarding class
- Three hours of skill checks
- Participants will be given two attempts at pre-course skills during any one session.
- Participants who fail the pre-course session may continue to re-enroll in the future
pre-course sessions during that semester without any additional costs.
- Participants must notify the REC if they want to re-enroll in a future pre-course
class, no walk-ins are allowed.
- Participants who fail both attempts in any pre-course class must re-try all skills
in the future pre-course class - not just the ones that were failed.

Class Information
- Three-year basic water rescue certification

- No Prerequisites
- Participants must be comfortable in chest-deep water, and must demonstrate competency
in all skills taught in course.
- Must attend and fully participate in the entire class
- Must pass all skill checks and receive an 80% or higher on written exam
- Bring one-piece swimsuit, towel, and padlock.
Class Length
- Training is approximately 4 hours
Cost
- The cost is $50 for all participants.
- NOTE: Participants who fail a certification class will not receive a credit or a refund.

Challenge format classes are offered as recertification classes. These classes do not contain any review or practice of skills. Participants must know material and skills, VERY, VERY well to pass. Only written and skills testing is done, NO INSTRUCTION. Participants will only have one try to correctly test out on skills and pass the written exam. Book and resuscitation mask will be provided to borrow during class.

Lifeguarding

American Red Cross Health and Safety instructors are an elite group of professionals who teach valuable lifesaving skills. Registrants must be at least 16 years old and hold current Red Cross Certifications.

- The cost is $150 for UT Students, REC members, non-members, and $25 for SRC staff
who sign a contract to teach for the SRC.

- Training is approximately 30 hours
Cost
- The cost is $150 for UT Students, REC members, non-members, and $25 for SRC staff
who sign a contract to teach for the SRC.

Water Safety Instructor (Swimming Instructor Certification)
Class Information
- Two-year instructor authorization in water safety
- Registrants must be at least 16 years old, be able to dive from the deck, perform
a flip turn, and swim 10-25 yards of all six strokes.
Prerequisites/Requirements
- Must complete all homework assignments and complete a practicum of two classes
Class Length
- Training is approximately 25 hours
Cost
- The cost is $150 for UT Students, REC members, non-members, and $25 for SRC staff
who sign a contract to teach for the SRC.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION
- Open to the community, UT students, and UT employees including the UTMC
- Must be submitted five days prior to the start of a class or the individual may be denied participation in that class, and the class may be subject to cancellation
- Must be submitted with payment to be considered registered for the class, or the individual may be dropped from the class
- Will be denied if a class is full; the Office of Recreation does not make waiting lists for classes
- Must have the release/consent portion signed before the start of a class
CANCELLATION INFORMATION
- If a class is cancelled or rescheduled by the Office of Recreation, registrants will receive a voucher good toward the same class held at a future date within the academic year or receive a full refund.
- Refunds are mailed in the form of a UT check and processing takes 3-4 weeks.
DROPPING A CLASS
- If a registrant drops a class with at least five days notice, s/he will receive a voucher or a refund minus a $15 processing fee. If a registrant drops a class with less than a five day notice, no credit or refund will be issued.
