Radiation Safety Training

Most individuals receive radiation safety training as part of the annual Safety Test on the Safety & Health Training Test Bank. The Ohio Department of Health,  Federal regulations, and University of Toledo policies may also require certain individuals who may be exposed to radiation as part of their job duties to complete additional department or job specific radiation safety training.

Training for Radioactive Materials

The 3.0 hour Radiation Safety Seminar is a radioactive material safety course for University of Toledo faculty, staff, and students who use radioactive materials in research laboratories. This course is required to work with radioactive material unsupervised.  This initial training course is mandatory for all individuals who possess, utilize, and store radioactive material at the University of Toledo.  Please contact the Radiation Safety Office to sign up for the next available class.

The 1.0 hour Radiation Safety Annual Refresher course is available online for University of Toledo faculty, staff, and students who use radioactive materials in research laboratories who have already completed the 3.0 hour initial Radioactive Material (RAM) safety course.

The course shall be completed one year after the 3.0 hour course and must be taken annually thereafter to maintain an active user status to sustain the privilege to order, possess, and utilize radioactive material at the University of Toledo. Proof of completion is mandatory and certificates must be made readily available for inspection by Radiation Safety Office and ODH Bureau of Environmental Health and Radiation Safety personnel.

After successfully passing the test, print off the certificate and file it inside the Radiation Safety log book for training records.

As per Ohio Administrative Code 3701:1-66-07, all individuals operating fluoroscopic equipment, and individuals likely to receive an annual effective dose equivalent in excess of one millisievert (one hundred millirem) from participating in fluoroscopic procedures, shall receive at least two hours of radiation protection training specific to fluoroscopy prior to performing or participating in fluoroscopic procedures.  The 2.0 hour "Safe Use of Fluoroscopy" course is available online for x-ray technologists, physicians, and staff who use fluoroscopy or are present when fluoroscopy is being performed.

You are only required to complete this training one time, although there is an abbreviated refresher course that you must complete biennially.

The Safe Use of Fluoroscopy Refresher training and test on the University of Toledo test bank must be completed biennially by each individual who has completed the initial training, in part to assist in satisfying the Joint Commission Elements of Performance and as good ALARA practice.  This is outlined in University of Toledo Health and Safety Policy HM-08-047.
