WELCOME TO YOUR HONORS COMMUNITY

Honors students at UToledo don't just grow as professionals and thinkers - they grow as people. Our excursions off-campus to see touring Broadway musicals or the latest Toledo Museum of Art exhibition expand their cultural horizons. Networking events attended by our successful Honors alumni hone communication skills and inspire confidence. Evenings spent at Fifth Third Field watching a Mud Hens baseball game or scaling the rock climbing wall at UToledo's Student Recreation Center create memories - and friendships - that will last a lifetime.

Learn below about all of the ways our high-achieving Rockets flourish outside of the classroom as much as they do inside of it!

Honors Learning Community

Our optional Honors Learning Community (HLC) provides JSHC students with fun, immersive experiences at Toledo's world-class cultural gems and entertainment destinations. The chance to explore the greater Northwest Ohio area through a new lens is often the favorite part of participants' time as Rockets. Since the HLC arranges all of the logistics for its events, including transportation, students living in the residence halls enjoy the opportunity to shake up their routine and get off-campus. Even commuter students who have lived in the region their whole lives learn much more about everything Toledo has to offer through our HLC trips!

Previous HLC excursions have included:

  • Riverfront cruises on a downtown stretch of the Maumee River
  • "Taste of Toledo" tours sampling Tony Packo's Cafe hot dogs, Swanky Scoops ice cream, alongside some of the other best bites and sips in town
  • Toledo Walleye hockey games at the Huntington Center
  • Stirring performances by the Toledo Symphony Orchestra and the Toledo Ballet
  • Broadway shows at the Stranahan Theater including The Lion King, Hamilton, and Hadestown
  • Roller skating and ice skating at The Ribbon, a rink at Glass City Metropark
  • Creating glass art pieces at Copper Moon Studio
  • Hiking local nature trails.
Join the HLC!

Enroll in the Honors Learning Community by registering for HLC 0500 as a course in whatever Fall/Spring semester(s) you want to participate in our HLC events! Make sure to do so before the Add/Drop deadline for the term.

Honors Musical

See pictures of these and other HLC outings on our Honors Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook pages!

Membership in the group is open exclusively to Honors students and costs $50 each semester (excluding Summer) during which a student is enrolled in the group.

That flat fee covers all of the costs associated with any of the HLC events a member chooses to attend. Attendance of these events is always optional and there is no limit as to how many outings members can attend. Because of this, active participants in the HLC will enjoy quite a bargain for the $50 fee they pay each semester! The "Honors Learning Community" fee is conveniently billed to their student account and paid alongside other university expenses. Make sure to pay this fee by the applicable due dates to avoid being charged late fees.

Honors students can join or withdraw from the group at any point of their undergraduate tenure according to the applicable term's course Add/Drop schedule. HLC withdrawals processed before the relevant Add/Drop deadline of any given semester will entail a refund of the HLC fee for that term.

Weekly Programming

The Honors College also hosts programming throughout the year that is open to all Honors students. While our signature trips to Cedar Point, Mud Hens baseball games, and the Lights Before Christmas at the Toledo Zoo are eagerly anticipated events each year, much of our all-student programming is conveniently located on campus. Whether picnics on the lawn of the Honors Academic Village, painting pumpkins and enjoying sweet treats at Fall Fest, traversing the high ropes course on campus, learning how to ballroom dance, attending Rockets basketball games, collaging and other forms of crafting, thrifting, meeting other Honors student at mixers, competing in indoor yard games and at LEGO assembly, trivia and board game nights, or grab-and-go meals and snacks, we offer something for everyone!

Alumni Networking

The community our students join extends beyond the camradrie and friendships they forge with each other through the HLC and our on-campus programming, however. UToledo Honors alumni are also eager to support these leaders of tomorrow as they begin building their careers today. Luncheons we host for both groups allow our students to receive career advice from and polish networking skills in casual conversation with our alumni - accomplished figures in the fields of medicine, law, science, politics, commerce, technology, and education. We also promote formal mentoring sessions where students are trained to write effective résumés or can pick the brains of practicing professionals during "ask me anything" exchanges.

Volunteering

Rockets who recognize the value of giving back to their UToledo community have the opportunity to join our Honors Adopt-a-Road group. Volunteers meet a few times each semester to remove litter from the roadways surrounding campus to help beautify the city of Toledo. Honors students are also invited to help pack meals for the hungry in our area and can help maintain UToledo's lovely landscaping.
