Copilot Basic is the free, web‑grounded version of Microsoft Copilot, while Copilot Premium is the paid tier that adds priority model access, deeper integration with Microsoft 365 apps, and the ability to use your own organizational data.

Microsoft 365 Copilot Basic

Copilot Basic is free and is available in Windows, Edge, and the mobile app.  Users receive limited in-app Copilot features.

Key characteristics:

  • Web-grounded responses only - Uses puplic internet data, not your organization's private files.
  • Limited integration - Can assist in chat and sometimes inside Word/Excel/PowerPoint, but cannot deeply edit or automate workflows.
  • Standard access limits - Lower priority for model availability and usage.
  • Can reference only the file you upload or have open, not your full organizational data.

Microsoft 365 Copilot Premium

Key advantages:

  • Deep Microsoft 365 integration - Edit documents, analyze spreadsheets, summarize meetings, and automate tasks directly inside Word (drafting, rewriting, summarizing), Excel (data analysis, formula generation), PowerPoint (deck creation), Outlook (email summarization and drafting), and Teams (meeting recaps and action items).
  • Access to your organizational data - via Microsoft Graph (emails, files, calendars, SharePoint, Teams).  This is the biggest difference.
  • Priority access to advanced models (e.g., GPT-4o, GPT-5.x) and higher usage limits.
  • Enterprise-grade privacy - Prompts and responses are not used to train foundation models.
  • Agent-like capabilities - Can perform multi-step tasks using your work data.  Workflow automation across systems.  Advanced built-in agents (e.g.,Researcher, Analyst).

Bottom Line

Copilot Basic gives you general AI assistance using public web data, while Copilot Premium unlocks full Microsoft 365 integration and secure access to your organization's knowledge-turning Copilot from a chatbot into a work-grounded productivity tool.
