Honors, Awards and Scholarships

The University of Toledo offers a number of scholarships to undergraduate students, information on these can be obtained from the Office of Financial Aid.

There are three scholarships in which preference is given to qualified undergraduate psychology students.

The Samar El-Okdi Memorial Scholarship is awarded to students who have overcome financial, emotional, or cultural barriers in their lives. Recipients must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, be active in community service, and be open-minded in the areas of race, religion, gender and politics. Preference is given to junior or senior-level students, and students studying psychology with an interest in anthropology or women's studies.

The James and Carol Mack Memorial Scholarship is awarded to full-time sophomore, junior, or senior-level students majoring in psychology. Recipients must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.

To apply for the Samar El-Okdi Memorial and the James and Carol Mack Memorial Scholarships, applicants must have taken a sufficient number of psychology courses to enable their qualifications to be evaluated, which are primarily academic. In addition to completing the application form, the applicant should include any non-UT college transcripts, describe his or her interests in psychology and plans for the future, and request two Psychology Department faculty members to send letters of recommendation to the Scholarships Committee.

The Robert J. Burns and Anne Evans Scholarship is awarded to full-time sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate-level students who demonstrate an interest in gerontology. Recipients must have a minimum 2.5 GPA. First preference is given to students majoring in psychology.

To apply, make sure your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is up to date and on file in the Office of Student Financial Aid. You can also contact the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.

Outstanding Student in Psychology Honor

In addition, the Department of Psychology annually honors one exceptional senior psychology major. No applications or letters are needed from students. Instead, nominations are submitted by faculty members. The criteria for the Outstanding Student award are primarily academic.

If you have questions or need more information, please contact Dr. Gregory Meyer, the Chair of the Scholarships Committee, at: gregory.meyer@utoledo.edu or at 419.530.4312.
