Professor Schmitt joined the faculty as a Professor of Law in 2025. Professor Schmitt's scholarship explores issues of state power and federalism. His articles have appeared in numerous journals, including the George Mason Law Review, William and Mary Law Review, and the Law and History Review.
 
Before joining the faculty, Professor Schmitt served as the Assistant Dean of Graduate Programs and Professor of Law at the University of Dayton School of Law. He clerked for Judge Susan H. Black of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and Judge Timothy J. Corrigan of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida. He also worked as an associate at Jones Day in Cleveland, Ohio.
 
Professor Schmitt graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he served on the executive board of the Virginia Law Review. He received his bachelor's degree from Miami University.
