The University of Toledo Infectious Diseases Fellowship is a two-year ACGME-accredited program that prepares physicians with the goal of both being proficient in diagnosing and treating a variety of complex infectious diseases conditions and being able to successfully pass the subspecialty examination in Infectious Diseases.

The University of Toledo Infectious Diseases Fellowship fosters a climate of safety and support for the fellows. Encouraging education and research while helping fellows become well rounded clinicians, educators and proficient board-certified Infectious Diseases consultants.  To achieve these goals, fellows receive extensive training in clinical practice, education and research.

During the two years of training, at least twelve months are spent on inpatient rounds, dispersed over two hospitals in the Toledo area. Up to nine months are spent on research of at least one individual project under the supervision of an Infectious Diseases or Department of Microbiology faculty member.  One month is spent with hands-on activities in the microbiology laboratory at University of Toledo Medical Center and/or rounding with the Antimicrobial Stewardship team.

Each fellow will spend one half day a week in the HIV/ID continuity clinic, following a variety of patients from the inpatient consult service as well as providing longitudinal care for the HIV population served by the Ryan White program. This activity is always supervised by an attending present in clinic. All cases are discussed in detail with the attending and sufficient time for teaching is allowed. The Ryan White program provides excellent multidisciplinary support for the HIV patients with complex needs.  Fellows are considered an essential part of a multidisciplinary team and will work in conjunction with the dedicated social workers, treatment adherence coordinators, nutritionists, case managers, and counselors.
