Living in Toledo
Toledo is located in northwest Ohio near the shores of western Lake Erie. A diverse population of 600,000 people lives and works in the Toledo metropolitan area. The city has long been known for its auto manufacturing and glass industry. It now also has a growing reputation as a great place to start a career and make a home. There are many reasons to come to Toledo. Toledo is a beautiful town with sprawling suburbs, beautiful parks and a newly rejuvenated downtown area.
Toledo is home to the famous Mud Hens baseball team and the world-renowned Toledo Museum of Art. There are many family-owned restaurants that have been around for decades and recently opened farm-to-table restaurants as well.
Further benefiting our program is the presence of The University of Toledo, one of just 27 public research universities in the country to offer a comprehensive menu of academic options – more than 230 undergraduate and graduate degree programs across the arts, business, education, engineering, law, medicine, nursing and pharmacy. In fact, many of our fellows take advantage of the fact that University offers fellows and resident free admission into the Masters of Public Health (MPH) program. UToledo is ranked among the top 100 public universities in the latest Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education Rankings. We also share a close relationship with the UToledo College of Medicine and regularly interact with residents and student in the academic, research and clinical settings.
Things TO DO in Toledo:
Toledo boasts a wide variety of recreational activities for trainees and their friends and family, including, of course, the Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) and the Toledo Zoo & Aquarium. For trainees with children, Toledo also has the Imagination Station—a hands-on science center for kids and families—and numerous playgrounds (like the new Secret Forest in the Toledo Botanical Garden) in addition to programs held by the TMA and Toledo Zoo. Nature lovers will be happy to know that in 2020, Toledo was awarded the National Gold Medal Award for excellence in parks and recreation management, the most prestigious honor in the parks and recreation industry. Toledo is home to 19 Metroparks that have more than 12,000 acres of protected natural land and 200 miles of trails. For sports fans, Toledo is home to the Toledo Mud Hens baseball team and the Toledo Walleye hockey team in addition to the many sports teams at the University of Toledo. There are many events and venues for music, theatre, dance, and other performances, as well. There's so much to do in Toledo, and the city can't wait to meet you!
Places to live in Toledo:
There are many safe and beautiful neighborhoods to live in within 10-20 minutes of the clinical sites where trainees will be rotating. The suburbs where most fellows and residents live include Sylvania, Perrysburg, Maumee, Reynolds Corners, Ottawa hills and Oregon. Each neighborhood has its own unique features, so there is something for everyone. While some trainees may choose to purchase a home, the area has very reasonable rental prices, with many two-bedroom apartments renting between $1,200-$2,000 a month (depending on location). Studio apartments and one-bedroom apartments rent for roughly $800-$1,100 a month (depending on location). Some residents and fellows live in Downtown Toledo to enjoy the easy access to restaurants, sports stadiums, river-side parks, and coffee shops. New apartment complexes like the Tower on Maumee provide safe and comfortable living for people looking to live the downtown lifestyle.
