Divisions: Infectious Disease
The Division of Infectious Diseases is dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis, and management of infectious diseases affecting infants, children, and adolescents. Serving northwest Ohio and surrounding regions, the division provides expert, evidence-based care for a wide range of common and complex infections, while supporting public health initiatives and antimicrobial stewardship.
Clinically, the division manages conditions including severe bacterial and viral infections, congenital and perinatal infections, osteomyelitis, endocarditis, tuberculosis, and infections in immunocompromised patients. The infectious diseases team works closely with primary care providers, hospitalists, intensivists, and subspecialists to ensure coordinated, comprehensive care. Strong collaboration with ProMedica Russell J. Ebeid Children’s Hospital and the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences supports clinical care, education, and scholarly activity.
Antimicrobial stewardship is a central component of the division’s mission, with emphasis on the appropriate use of antimicrobial agents to optimize patient outcomes, reduce antimicrobial resistance, and minimize adverse effects. The division also plays an active role in infection prevention and control, partnering with hospital and community stakeholders to support outbreak management, vaccination efforts, and patient safety initiatives.
The division is actively engaged in education and training, offering clinical and didactic learning opportunities for medical students, residents, and fellows. Educational efforts emphasize core principles of infectious disease management, microbiology, epidemiology, and evidence-based practice.
Scholarly activities focus on advancing the understanding of pediatric infectious diseases and improving prevention and treatment strategies. Areas of interest include vaccine-preventable diseases, emerging infections, antimicrobial resistance, and population health. Through clinical care, education, scholarship, and community outreach, the Division of Infectious Diseases is committed to improving the health and well-being of children and families throughout the region.
