Medical Student Clerkship: General Overview

The Department of Surgery Clerkship is dedicated to instructing students in the science and art of the surgical practice. With the help of our skilled faculty we are able to accomplish this. The faculty are dedicated and grateful for the opportunity to share their knowledge and participate in your medical education. We are confident that the knowledge that you receive from this clerkship will be most beneficial regardless of the area of practice you decide.

The surgery clerkship is composed of a 8-week course broken down in two intervals of assigned clinical rotation. Prior to each clinical rotation is an orientation consisting of general surgery didactics, simulation demonstration and practice, suture labs, OR scrub sessions.

During our surgery clerkship all students are assigned to general surgery sites for four weeks. During this core experience, students will complete new patient work-ups in the following categories:

  • Hepatobiliary
  • GI tract
  • Breast
  • Acute emergencies
  • Trauma
  • Vascular
  • Surgical Critical Care
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Colorectal Surgery
  • Pediatric Surgery

In addition to general surgery, students may participate in one 4-week rotation in a subspecialty of their choice. The subspecialty services available are:

  • Cardiothoracic Surgery
  • Orthopedics
  • Urology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Plastic Surgery

Students’ involvement with these patients will ideally encompass the elements of total, longitudinal care. For each patient encounter, students will complete a history and physical exam, accompany the patient to the operating room, complete an appropriate physical exam for each day of hospitalization, complete daily progress notes, and participate in ward rounds.
