Maumee River FLOWS Project

Project description:

We are accepting science and art teacher applications for collaboration on the Maumee River Floating Laboratory on Watershed Science (FLOWS) education project.

Scope:

Water science includes aspects of biology, chemistry and physics; as such, it is relevant to teachers of these subjects. All aspects, especially stewardship and presentation of the project synthesis, are invited to include artistic elements to enrich the experience.

Audience:

Focus is high schools and middle schools in the Toledo Public Schools (TPS) district and urban charter schools located in the Toledo riverside urban area. Note: Schools in all areas will be considered with preference for schools in close proximity to the Sandpiper’s downtown Toledo dock.

Support:

Teachers accepted into the program will receive stipends ($1500), educational materials (e.g. water testing kits, guide books, classroom materials, stewardship project materials), and summertime training. Teachers will also receive classroom visits and academic year support from our team of experts. Students will receive educational materials and a Sandpiper science cruise.

Timeline:

• Teacher classroom and field training: June 14-18, 2021
• Student classroom curriculum: 2021-22 Academic Year
• Student Sandpiper science cruises: Sept 2021, May 2022, Sept 2022
• Stewardship projects: throughout
• Synthesis and sharing: Sept-Oct 2022
