Math Placement

Math placement tests are required for all new students unless they have credit for math that appears on a college transcript.

PLACEMENT & ALEKS

The University of Toledo uses ALEKS Placement to provide an accurate measure of students’ current mathematical skills so that they will be accurately placed in their mathematics courses. ALEKS placement is available both online at the UToledo ALEKS page and also in the Testing Center (Memorial Field House 1080).

ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to determine exactly what students know and don't know about a topic. Students will gain a better sense of their strengths and weaknesses in math and have a chance to work on those weaknesses. The most important thing is that they take the assessment seriously and give it an honest effort so that the assessment truly reflects their level of knowledge and math preparedness. The more time students spend with ALEKS, the more topics they will review and master - and the better their placement!

Students can take the placement test up to three times within a six-week period. Students must wait 48 hours and spend at least five hours of practice within the ALEKS system in order to qualify for a retake. The cost is $20 and is paid directly to ALEKS.

Once a student takes a MATH course, any subsequent ALEKS placement scores will be invalid and will not be considered a replacement for course prerequisites.

More information about ALEKS can be found on the UToledo ALEKS page.

Students enrolling in Math Camp can choose to take the ALEKS placement either before, during or after the instructional sessions.

Paper Tests

Alternatively, on-campus math placement testing is available, but this is not recommended. Each of these tests may only be taken once in a calendar year. To determine which on-campus test(s) should be taken, you will need to know your ACT/SAT scores. If you do not know your ACT scores, visit ACT score information. If you do not know your SAT scores, visit SAT score information. Once you know your ACT/SAT scores see the Placement Brochure PDF to determine which placement exam(s) you need to take.
