Trademarks and Licensing

Trademarks and Licensing

UToledo trademarks and logos are recognizable to alumni, fans and students everywhere. That's why it's so important to us to protect these marks and images by licensing their proper usage.

  • Protect — control, provide consistency and establish parameters for usage of trademarks and images
  • Promote — increase public and institutional awareness of The University of Toledo
  • Profit — generate revenue through the sale of officially licensed merchandise that helps with operational costs and supports the university mascot program

The University holds trademark licenses with a wide range of companies — large and small, local and national. This includes Champion, Under Armour and Nike, advertising specialty companies, and local stores near campus.

Who needs a licensing agreement?

Any person or business/organization wishing to use the University's trademarks or verbiage on a product must have an official license before offering the product or goods for sale. This includes companies working with University departments, campus organizations and student recognized organizations.

Apply for a License

It typically takes 3-4 weeks to process an application for a standard license.

Once you receive a license and before any merchandise is produced featuring University of Toledo marks, all artwork must be submitted and approved through the CLC approval site, Brand Manager 360. This will allow the Licensing Manager to determine if merchandise is ready for production or if changes are needed. The entire approval process is handled via the Internet.

Unauthorized Use

A trademark infringement is unauthorized use or similar use of a trademark that causes the likelihood of confusion in the minds of the consumers about the source.

All licensed vendors are required to identify their product with the "Collegiate Licensed Product" label. When they see this label, alumni, students, fans and supporters know they are buying a product of quality and authenticity that has been manufactured in accordance with University standards.

At The University of Toledo, net revenues generated through the sale of licensed merchandise support the University in various ways.
