Human Research Protection Program

Required IRB Training

The University of Toledo requires all study personnel engaged in human subject research (including research using information and specimens from human subjects) to complete the applicable training mandated by the Terms of our Federalwide Assurance.

1. CITI Training

All individuals involved in human subject research must complete training through their University affiliated CITI (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative) account at https://www.citiprogram.org before they can be approved as a member of the research team.

Researchers submitting to the Biomedical IRB are REQUIRED to take the "Biomedical Researchers and Students" course.

Researchers submitting to the Social, Behavioral & Education IRB must take EITHER the "Social-Behavioral-Educational Research & Students" course or the "Biomedical Researchers and Students" course.

There are two versions of each course: a BASIC training and a REFRESHER training. Below is the order in which trainings should be completed.

     3yrs                      3yrs                       3yrs                      3yrs
BIOMEDICAL =  BASIC   →    REFRESHER   →    REFRESHER    →   REFRESHER   →   BASIC
SBE  =  BASIC   →    REFRESHER   →    REFRESHER    →   BASIC

BASIC training must be taken every 12 years (Biomedical) or 9 years (SBE) irrespective of having a current REFRESHER course.
