The University of Toledo Office of Sustainability

Life Below Water

Life Below Water, aligned with UN SDG 14, emphasizes the protection and sustainable use of oceans, seas, and marine resources. For UToledo, this translates into initiatives centered around water quality research, early detection of harmful algal blooms, and public education on water sustainability. Efforts aim to not only preserve aquatic ecosystems but also ensure safe drinking water for the community.

Key Initiatives

  1. Water Quality Monitoring and Research
UToledo has been at the forefront of water quality research, particularly following the 2014 Toledo water crisis caused by a harmful algal bloom in Lake Erie. The university’s Water Task Force has conducted over 150 sponsored projects to monitor and improve water quality, including developing technologies for early detection and toxin management. Research led by UToledo scientists continues to shape water treatment methods, using advanced systems like liquid chromatography to identify contaminants.
  2. Collaboration and Partnerships
UToledo collaborates with local water utilities and state agencies, sharing data and developing solutions to maintain water safety. Researchers are working with the Ohio Department of Higher Education’s Harmful Algal Bloom Research Initiative, implementing biofilters and other sustainable treatment technologies to improve water quality.
  3. Public Engagement and Education
The university conducts workshops, educational campaigns, and policy discussions to raise awareness about water conservation and sustainable water practices. These programs aim to foster a community of informed citizens committed to the protection of aquatic ecosystems and responsible water use.

Achievements and Impact

  • Significant Reduction in Water Toxins: Efforts to enhance early detection and treatment methods have improved water safety, ensuring clean drinking water for the Toledo community.
  • Over $50 Million in Funding: UToledo has secured substantial funding for water research, showcasing its commitment to safeguarding aquatic ecosystems

Why It Matters

Protecting aquatic ecosystems is vital for maintaining biodiversity, ensuring access to clean water, and supporting community health. UToledo’s initiatives contribute to sustainable water management and align with both AASHE STARS and UN SDG 14, reinforcing its dedication to environmental sustainability.
