The University of Toledo Office of Sustainability

Responsible Consumption and Production

Responsible consumption and production focus on sustainable management of resources to minimize environmental impact and reduce waste. This aligns with UN SDG 12, which encourages efficient use of natural resources, responsible waste management, and recycling to ensure environmental sustainability. UToledo prioritizes responsible consumption as a key part of its sustainability initiatives.

Key Initiatives

  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Programs: UToledo promotes waste minimization across its campuses through comprehensive recycling campaigns. The programs encourage the university community to reduce waste generation, engage in recycling activities, and find ways to repurpose items. The "Rocket Recycling" initiative is a cornerstone, focusing on waste diversion through recycling stations, composting, and proper disposal methods.
  • Sustainable Purchasing Policies: The university has adopted responsible purchasing policies that favor environmentally friendly and sustainably sourced products. These policies are intended to reduce the carbon footprint and support ethical labor practices by sourcing materials that have minimal environmental impact throughout their lifecycle.
  • Energy Efficiency in Buildings: By implementing energy-efficient systems, UToledo not only reduces energy consumption but also extends the lifecycle of its infrastructure. Projects like the installation of LED lighting and efficient HVAC systems in various buildings help manage resource use while supporting responsible consumption

Achievements and Impact

  • Waste Diversion Success: The university has achieved significant waste diversion rates, increasing the percentage of waste recycled annually. For example, the recycling rate increased from 14.7% to 18.2% within a year, reducing landfill waste and lowering associated costs.
  • Sustainable Procurement: Through careful sourcing and sustainable purchasing, UToledo has managed to reduce its overall procurement emissions, supporting the broader goal of minimizing resource consumption.

 Why It Matters

Responsible consumption and production are critical for reducing resource depletion and mitigating climate change. By promoting sustainable practices in purchasing, energy use, and waste management, UToledo is actively contributing to a more sustainable future. This approach not only benefits the environment but also supports economic efficiency and social well-being, aligning with the three pillars of sustainability: People, Planet, and Profit.
