Industrial Pharmacy Division
Mission of the Industrial Pharmacy Program
- Develop a basic understanding of five functional areas: chemistry, computer science, engineering, pharmaceutical manufacturing and data analysis.
- Apply knowledge from these five functional areas to a contemporary industrial pharmacy project.
- Offer the opportunity to apply this knowledge within a specific manufacturing setting. This can be likened to an internship-type experience.
Goals
The overall goal of the Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences - Industrial Pharmacy Option at The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy is to prepare students to assume pharmaceutical manufacturing positions performing a variety of specialized tasks including preformulation evaluation, dosage form design, stability testing, pilot plant scale-up and production.
Objectives
- The program will develop the student's ability to work effectively with colleagues, other scientists and industrial professionals and administrators.
- The program will develop the student's ability to search for and interpret information applicable to specific projects in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
- The program will foster problem-solving and decision-making skills that may be applied to the development, testing and production of pharmaceutical dosage forms.
- The program will encourage the student to become involved in professional associations at national and regional levels where applicable.
- The program will develop the student's ability to ascertain the types of pharmaceutical products that are currently used and those that may be needed in the future. It will also develop the student's ability to design dosage forms to meet these needs.
- The program will provide the student with specific training in industrial pharmacy that will provide a competitive edge in the pharmaceutical industry job market over graduates of other less focused programs which do not emphasize industrial pharmacy.
Vision for the Future
The Industrial Pharmacy Division is always open to inter- and intra-departmental, institutional, industrial and personal collaborations in research which will expand the knowledge within science and foster cooperation between institutions.
