License Alternative Masters Program (LAMP) in Special Education

The License Alternative Masters Program (LAMP) in Special Education is designed for the student who already holds a baccalaureate degree in a major other than education and wants to become a licensed teacher in the State of Ohio . The program provides coursework that will lead toward the initial four year residence teacher license in Intervention Specialist and, at the same time, meet the requirements for a Masters Degree in Education.
In order to be eligible for the SPED LAMP program, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree
  • Have a GPA of at least 2.7 (cumulative of all undergraduate work)

The SPED LAMP program consists of a variety of courses that can typically be completed in two academic years. It includes field experiences, as well as a 75 day student teaching experience.  

This is a comprehensive licensure-focused program. While the content of the courses represents entry-level knowledge and skills, the requirements for graduate students recognize that these students should demonstrate advanced academic ability.

  • Abackground check must be completed for all filed-based courses
  • The State of Ohio requires successful completion of the Praxis II to be eligible for licensure upon completion.  These tests should be taken prior to student teaching to allow time for processing.
  • Varied field experience required for licensure.
  • Intervention Specialists are required to be Highly Qualified (HQT) in core academic content.  Based on previous coursework, additional classes/professional development may be required to obtain HQT status.
