Stephanie (Stone) Schlitter Memorial Scholarship Established
December 2014: The Department would like to announce establishment of the Stephanie (Stone) Schlitter Memorial Scholarship. A 2010 graduate, Stephanie led numerous service activities for the Department and was recognized for her outstanding student leadership. Scholarship recipients will be selected based on their volunteer service contributions. If you would like to donate to the fund, please click the"Make a Gift"button to the left, search the fund list for "Chemical and Environmental Engineering Progress Fund", and add a comment indicating the gift is for the Schlitter Memorial Scholarship.

Dean LeBlanc V. The Gingerbread Man
December 2014: Dean Steve LeBlanc once again won his annual competition with the Gingerbread man at the Department Holiday Party. Mr. Gingerbread was clearly the first to lose his head! 

AIChE Student Chapter ChemE Car Team Places 3rd at Nationals
November 2014: The University of Toledo AIChE Student Chapter ChemE Car Team placed third at the national competition held Sunday November 16, 2014 in Atlanta GA as part of the Annual AIChE Meeting. The five-person car team led by Scott Grekowicz was able to stop their car within 9 cm of the target distance of 26 m. AIChE Receives Three Clean Your Streams Awards
October 2014: AIChE participated in the 18th Annual Clean Your Streams river clean-up event September 20. A group of 15 students pulled many bags of trash from Swan Creek including 8 shopping carts which required wading into the water. Their efforts earned them the First Place Award for Collegiate Awesome Effort, the Second Place Award for Collegiate Battle of the Bags, and the Third Place Award for Collegiate Most Volunteers - quite a haul. Congratulations AIChE!

Experiments in Space
September 2014: Dr. Schall's protein crystallization experiments were carried to the ISS aboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule. This photo shows the capsule just prior to docking.

Professor Schall's Research Launches to the ISS
September 2014: Early September 21, protein crystallization experiments from UT took off from the Kennedy Space Center for the International Space Station, culminating a year of preparation. The research is led by Dr. Schall with co-investigators Drs. Ronning, Mueser, and Hanson as well as three graduate students, Steven Dajnowicz, Michael Banco, and Nandu Yanna. The experiments seek to produce neutron diffraction crystals and are supported by a grant from the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS).

Students Receive AIChE Awards
September 2014: Congratulations to Ryan Kremer for receipt of the AIChE Donald F. Othmer Sophomore Academic Excellence Award and to Alec Cielinski for receipt of the AIChE Outstanding Freshman Award! Both awards include complimentary registration and $50 travel allowance for attendance at the upcoming 2014 Annual Student Conference.

Faculty Busy This Past Summer
September 2014: Professor Kim taught a class in the Petroleum & Petrochemical College of Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. He also spent 10 weeks at the Air Force Institute of Technology in Dayton.

Professor Escobar was in the news as an expert on the water woes in Toledo due to elevated microcystins. A list is available on her web page.

Professor Lipscomb was a visiting professor at the National University of Singapore.

July 2014: The latest work of Professor Lapitsky and graduate students Yan Huang and Patrick Lawrence on adhesive gels is featured on the July 8, 2014 cover of Langmuir. Congratulations!

Professor Kim Invited to Thailand
June 2014: Professor Dong-Shik Kim was invited to teach his Chemical Reaction Engineering course at the Petroleum & Petrochemical College of Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. He will be busy this summer as he also plans to spend time at the Air Force Institute of Technology in Dayton.

Faculty Teach Workshops at NAMS 2014 
June 2014: Three Professors co-instructed workshops at the 2014 annual meeting of the North American Membrane Society (NAMS). Professor Coleman co-taught Polymeric and Inorganic Membrane Materials and Membrane Formation, Professor Escobar co-taught Membranes for Water Treatment, and Professor Lipscomb co-taught Membranes for Gas Separations.

Professor to Co-Organize International Membrane Meeting
June 2014: Professor Glenn Lipscomb and Professor Ranil Wickramasinghe (University of Arkansas) will co-organize the 2017 International Congress on Membranes and Membrane Processes in San Francisco, CA. This triennial meeting is the largest global meeting of membranologists and is held every nine years in North America.

Dr. Nave Named PVAMU Provost
May 2014: Prof. Felecia McInnis Nave (PhD 2005) was selected Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Prairie View A&M University (read more here). Prof. Nave received her degree working with Professor Maria Coleman. Congratulations Dr. Nave!

Renee Norrils Receives Masters
May 2014: Renee Norrils (Department Secretary) received a master of liberal studies degree at the spring 2014 commencement. She is a member of Golden Key International Honour Society and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. Congratulations Renee!

First Selfie at College of Engineering Commencement
May 2014: Graduate Brian McGlown took the first ever selfie at the College of Engineering Commencement. Congrats to Brian and all of the Spring 2014 graduates.

AIChE Student Chapter Takes 2nd Place in ChemE Car Competition
May 2014: Congratulations to The University of Toledo AIChE Student Chapter for taking second place in the North Central Regional ChemE Car Competition! Videos of their two runs are available here: Run 1Run 2.

They are eligible to compete in the national competition at the AIChE Annual Meeting November 16-21, 2014 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Joe Montion Takes 2nd Place in Paper Competition
May 2014: Congratulations to Junior Joseph P. Montion for taking second place in the North Central Regional Student Paper Competition! Joe presented his work with Professor Maria Coleman on polymeric ionic liquids.

Jordan Keefe Receives Jefferson Award
February 2014: Congratulations to ChemE senior Jordan Keefe for his recognition by the University of Toledo as a Jefferson Awards Champion Honoree. Jordan started his own non-profit organization in 2013 called 'Save the Feet'. As an award recipient, Jordan will be attending a recognition event in Washington DC.
