Bachelor of Social Work

Program Overview

The University of Toledo’s Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program prepares students to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives and communities. Rooted in education, research, and real-world engagement, the program emphasizes human rights, social justice, and advocacy.

Students gain the knowledge and hands-on experience to work with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. Alongside rigorous coursework, every student completes a 448-hour field placement, building practical skills and confidence to step into the profession as a competent, compassionate social worker

Why Study Social Work?

Social work is more than a career, it’s a calling to serve, advocate, and lead change.

As a social worker, you’ll stand alongside people facing some of life’s most difficult challenges, including poverty, abuse, mental health struggles, addiction, and illness. You’ll become a trusted advocate, a problem-solver, and a connector. You will be helping individuals and families navigate barriers and create brighter futures.

Graduates of social work bring their expertise into schools, hospitals, shelters, nonprofits, and government agencies, driving positive change wherever they go. With a BSW degree, you’ll be ready for roles in:

  • Child welfare
  • Health and mental health care
  • Justice and corrections
  • Advocacy and community organizing
  • Policy and planning
  • Research and administration

The demand for social workers is rising, especially in mental health and substance use services, making this profession both personally rewarding and professionally in-demand.

What Makes UToledo’s BSW Program Unique?

At UToledo, you will experience a generalist social work education grounded in the strengths perspective, giving you the tools to work effectively in diverse communities.

You’ll develop core skills in:

  • Assessment and intervention
  • Advocacy and policy practice
  • Program evaluation and research

Through your field placement, you’ll put classroom knowledge into action, working directly with community partners and building a professional network that supports your career long after graduation.

Our expert faculty and strong community partnerships ensure you’re not just learning but you’re preparing for a career that transforms lives. Whether your passion lies in child welfare, healthcare, mental health, or public policy, a BSW from UToledo gives you the confidence, experience, and purpose-driven mindset to lead with impact.
