Program Tracks

2-Year Certificate of Completion Track (60 semester hours): The 2-year track is for students who desire to obtain basic transition skills in preparation for community employment or enrollment in a degree program.

4-Year Certificate of Completion (120 semester hours): The 4-year track is for students who desire additional knowledge and skills necessary to obtain community employment.

Students in both tracks construct an electronic portfolio throughout their program. An electronic portfolio is a multi-media presentation given to employers to assist students in marketing their skills in a specific job cluster. The portfolio contains elements that depict the knowledge and skills of each student.

Both curricula focus on 4 basic transition areas: Academics, Employment, Independent Living, and Self-Determination & Student Development.

Academics

The academic program area focuses on academic access and lifelong learning through auditing University of Toledo courses and program Learning Community courses that support students’ personal and career goals.

Students are supported by:

  • Program Coordinator, whose responsibilities include coordinating with university faculty, assisting students with course selection and sequencing, and evaluating/monitoring student performance on a weekly basis.
  • Educational Coaches, trained UT students or mentors whose responsibilities include providing students with support and accommodations as necessary, as well as assisting the T2 Coordinator with student evaluation and monitoring

Employment

The Employment area of the program focuses on career development and job readiness through unpaid internships using a Project SEARCH model, with the goal of obtaining and sustaining competitive, permanent employment. Employment experiences are aligned with student interests, skills and goals as closely as possible; initial placements place a stronger focus on learning/enhancing soft skills.

Toledo Transition Employment

T2 students typically engage in internships that are 15 weeks long and 7- 10 hours per week.

Students are supported by:

  • Program Coordinator – collaborates with UT Project SEARCH program for job placement and support; monitors student performance
  • Job Coaches - Trained UT students who provide on-the-job training and support
  • Job Placement Specialist - collaborates with Program Coordinator and adult agencies for competitive community job placement

Independent Living/ Campus Membership

The Independent Living area of the program focuses on activities where students learn and practice skills required to live independently, make healthy choices, and socialize successfully. This program area also focuses on campus membership and support for participation in campus and community organizations, activities and events.  T2 students also engage in social activities on and around campus. Some examples include eating in restaurants at the student union, working out at the Rec Center, attending sports events, and participating in advocacy opportunities.

Self-Determination/ Student Development

The Self-Determination & Student Development area of the program focuses on advocacy and community service through student-directed, person-centered planning, mentoring and volunteering. Students are a leading role in their Person-Centered Planning (PCP) Meetings, where they meet with various stakeholders to review progress, develop goals and actions steps, as well as identify necessary supports.
